Commuter Update: Navigating Construction and Spring Break Gridlock

Central Florida commuters should prepare for significant travel times this Wednesday, March 18, 2026. A combination of peak Spring Break travel, active construction zones on major arteries, and localized road closures in Downtown Orlando and College Park is expected to create heavy congestion throughout the day. With the region currently experiencing a surge in visitors, traffic volumes on corridors leading to the attractions and Orlando International Airport (MCO) are significantly higher than the seasonal average.

Major Highway Impacts: I-4 and SR 429

The ongoing "Moving I-4 Forward" initiative continues to impact travel through the tourist corridor. Motorists should anticipate slowdowns near the Sand Lake Road (SR 482) and Daryl Carter Parkway interchanges as crews work on the transition to Diverging Diamond configurations. Additionally, construction has ramped up on the Project 3 phase between US 27 and ChampionsGate, leading to narrowed lanes and shifting traffic patterns.

  • SR 429 (Western Beltway): A nightly closure of the Schofield Road ramp to northbound SR 429 remains in effect through Thursday morning. Commuters traveling during late-night or early-morning hours should detour via Avalon Road to access the northbound expressway from New Independence Parkway.
  • I-4 Attractions Area: Expect heavy stop-and-go traffic between SR 536 and SR 528. Afternoon congestion is projected to begin as early as 2:00 p.m. due to the high volume of Spring Break travelers.

Local Road Closures and Detours

Several long-term and emergency projects are affecting surface streets in the heart of Orlando:

  • Summerlin Avenue: A full closure is in place between Livingston Street and Harwood Street for utility infrastructure replacement. Northbound traffic is being detoured via Concord Street and Cathcart Avenue.
  • College Park (Alba Drive): Emergency paver repairs have closed Alba Drive between Ellwood Avenue and Westmoreland Drive. This closure is expected to last through Friday, March 20.
  • Downtown Core: While the Immerse Festival setup has concluded, residual utility work near South Street and Summerlin Avenue continues to restrict turn lanes, causing minor delays during the morning peak.

Public Transit and Airport Alert

Public transportation users should be aware of the system-wide schedule adjustments implemented by LYNX earlier this year. Several routes, including Link 34 and Link 45, have been discontinued, and commuters are encouraged to verify their schedules on the LYNX mobile app before heading to their stops. SunRail continues to offer its expanded weekday schedule, including late-night trains for those commuting from the northern and southern suburbs.

Finally, those heading to Orlando International Airport should allow an extra 45 to 60 minutes. The airport is currently managing high passenger volumes following several days of flight disruptions across the East Coast. This has led to heavy backups on the Beachline Expressway (SR 528) and the Central Florida GreeneWay (SR 417) at the airport access points.
