Official City Notice: Blue-Green Algae Health Alerts

The Florida Department of Health in Orange County has issued active health alerts and cautions for several local water bodies due to the presence of harmful blue-green algae toxins. As of Saturday, February 14, 2026, a formal health alert remains in effect for Lake Killarney (near the center of the lake) following water samples that confirmed the presence of toxins. Additionally, a health caution is active for the West Shore of Lake Gatlin.

Residents and visitors are advised to take the following precautions:

  • Do not drink, swim, wade, or use personal watercraft in waters where algae blooms are visible.
  • Keep pets away from the shoreline to prevent them from drinking or grooming themselves after contact with affected water.
  • Do not cook or clean dishes with water from these lakes; boiling the water does not eliminate the toxins.
  • Limit or avoid eating fish from these areas.

Public Works: Active Road Closures and Construction

The City of Orlando’s Transportation Department has confirmed several ongoing road closures that will affect weekend travel. Motorists are encouraged to plan alternate routes to avoid delays in the following areas:

  • Bumby Avenue: Total closure remains in place between Jamie Circle and Weber Street for the Bumby Avenue Safety Improvement Project. This closure is scheduled to persist through February 16.
  • Muriel Street: Traffic is restricted between South Orange Avenue and Delaney Avenue for ongoing construction, with an estimated completion date of late February.
  • Fern Creek Avenue: The intersection at Oregon Street in Colonialtown remains closed for the Fern Creek Improvement Project.
  • Brookhaven Drive: Continuous closure from Alden Road to the east of the 'Yard at Brookhaven' construction site is active.

Looking ahead, additional closures on Bumby Avenue and Jefferson Street will begin at 4:00 a.m. on Sunday, February 15, to accommodate the Lovers Lane Milk Mart event.

Community Notice: City Office Closures and Holiday Schedules

Please note that residential garbage, recycling, and yard waste collection will continue to follow a regular schedule, as the city only pauses these services for Thanksgiving and Christmas Day.
