Orlando Leaders Commemorate MLK Day with Service Initiatives and Press Conference

Today, Monday, January 19, 2026, the City of Orlando and Orange County are officially observing Martin Luther King Jr. Day. While legislative chambers at City Hall and the County Administration Building remain quiet due to the federal holiday, local government activity has shifted from the dais to the community. Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer and Orange County Mayor Jerry L. Demings are spending the day leading several high-profile service initiatives and commemorative events aimed at honoring Dr. King’s legacy through civic action rather than traditional legislative sessions.

Mayors Host MLK Day of Service Press Conference

The centerpiece of today’s official government schedule is a scheduled press conference at 10:30 a.m. at the Orange County Convention Center. Orange County Mayor Jerry L. Demings will be joined by representatives from the City of Orlando Mayor’s Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Commission and the non-profit organization U.S. Hunger. The briefing will focus on the progress of the 3rd Annual MLK Day of Service Million Meal Pack, a massive volunteer effort currently underway in the North Concourse of the facility.

During the press conference, officials are expected to discuss the impact of local food insecurity and the importance of public-private partnerships in addressing community needs. This year’s service event has an ambitious goal of packing one million healthy meals for distribution as food relief throughout the Central Florida region. Over 5,000 volunteers have registered for the effort, which the city has designated as a "day on, not a day off" for municipal and county employees who wish to serve their community.

Honoring Local Political Pioneers

Earlier this morning, Mayor Buddy Dyer and several members of the City Council attended the Arthur “Pappy” Kennedy Annual Prayer Breakfast at First Baptist Church Orlando. The event serves as a critical political and social touchstone for the city, commemorating both Dr. King and the late Arthur “Pappy” Kennedy. Kennedy holds a significant place in Orlando’s government history as the city’s first African American City Council member, having paved the way for the diverse representation seen in the current administration.

The city's "Seedlings for Civil Rights" initiative also kicked off at 9:00 a.m. at the Rosemont Community Center. This program, coordinated by the City of Orlando’s Green Up and Keep Orlando Beautiful programs, involves city staff and residents in beautification efforts and tree planting, symbolizing the growth of Dr. King’s dream within local neighborhoods.

Schedule for Upcoming Government Sessions

Due to the holiday closures, residents and stakeholders should be aware of changes to the standard meeting schedules for both the city and the county government:

  • Orlando City Council: The regular Monday meeting has been rescheduled. The Council will next convene on Monday, January 26, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. in the City Council Chambers at City Hall.
  • Orange County Board of County Commissioners: The Board will resume its normal business schedule tomorrow, Tuesday, January 20, 2026, with a regular business meeting beginning at 9:00 a.m.
  • Municipal Services: While administrative offices are closed, residential trash collection for the City of Orlando is proceeding as scheduled today.

Mayor Dyer and the City Commissioners previously proclaimed the period of January 11 through January 19 as "Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday Week" in Orlando, and today’s activities mark the official conclusion of this city-wide observance.
