Public Health Alert: Blue-Green Algae Advisories
The Florida Department of Health in Orange County maintains active health alerts for several local water bodies following recent water quality assessments. As of late February, residents are cautioned to avoid contact with Lake Killarney and Lake Gatlin due to the presence of harmful blue-green algae toxins. The following precautions are officially advised:
- Do not drink, swim, or boat in waters where a visible bloom is present.
- Keep pets away from the shoreline and prevent them from drinking lake water.
- Avoid using lake water for irrigation of lawns or gardens.
Testing remains ongoing by environmental scientists, and health officials will lift the alerts once toxin levels return to safe parameters for two consecutive weeks. Residents are reminded that these blooms can fluctuate based on temperature and recent rainfall.
Transportation Update: SR 436 Semoran Boulevard Resurfacing
The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) has confirmed that major resurfacing operations on State Road 436 (Semoran Boulevard) are now active. The project area spans from U.S. 441 to the Seminole County line. Throughout this week and into the upcoming weekend, motorists should expect lane shifts and shoulder cleanup activity as crews finalize Maintenance of Traffic (MOT) setups. In addition to pavement improvements, the project will upgrade pedestrian curb ramps to current ADA standards and install a new video-based signal detection system. Motorists are urged to exercise caution and anticipate minor delays during peak travel hours.
