Public Safety: Cold Weather Emergency and Warming Centers

Due to forecasted temperatures dropping below 40°F, Orange County has activated temporary warming centers to support residents in need of overnight shelter. For Wednesday, January 28, 2026, the following locations will be open from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 a.m. the following morning:

  • Barnett Park Recreation Center: 4801 West Colonial Drive, Orlando, FL 32808.
  • Goldenrod Recreation Center: 4863 North Goldenrod Road, Winter Park, FL 32792.

LYNX will provide free transportation to these locations. Pickups for rural East Orange County residents will occur at Bithlo Community Park at 5:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. tonight. Secured pets are permitted at the centers; however, owners must provide their own carriers and supplies.

Infrastructure Alert: Major Road Closure at West Colonial Drive

The City of Orlando Public Works Department has announced a significant road closure beginning today, Wednesday, January 28, 2026. Peachtree Road will be closed at the intersection of West Colonial Drive for essential sewer repairs. This closure is expected to remain in effect through Friday, January 30.

  • Detour Information: Motorists attempting to access Peachtree Road will be detoured via Edgewater Drive.
  • Ongoing Construction: Heavy construction and intersection closures continue at Fern Creek Avenue and Oregon Street, as well as on Muriel Street between South Orange and Delaney Avenues. Both projects are slated for completion by late February.

Official City Meetings and Public Hearings

Several city boards and committees are scheduled to convene today. These meetings are open to the public and provide opportunities for community oversight:

  • Harry P. Leu Gardens Board of Trustees: In-person meeting at the garden facilities.
  • City Investment Committee Meeting: Scheduled for today at City Hall.
  • Downtown Development Board/CRA Advisory Board: Regular monthly meeting regarding downtown growth and redevelopment.

Residents are also reminded that the City is currently soliciting feedback for the 2026-2030 Consolidated Plan. This five-year strategy outlines priorities for affordable housing and community development. Public participation is encouraged to help shape the distribution of federal grant funds for the upcoming program year.

Health Advisory: Regional Freeze Warning

The National Weather Service has issued a Freeze Warning for interior Central Florida effective through Thursday morning. Residents are urged to take the necessary precautions to protect the 'Four Ps': People, Pets, Plants, and Pipes. Vulnerable vegetation should be covered, and outdoor pets should be brought inside to avoid exposure to sub-freezing wind chills.
