Commuter Overview for Thursday, February 12

Orlando commuters should prepare for a busy Thursday on the roads as several major infrastructure projects and a scheduled downtown event impact travel. Significant lane closures at the intersection of State Road 434 and State Road 436 will likely cause delays for those traveling through the Altamonte Springs and Longwood areas, while downtown travelers must navigate afternoon event-related closures on Orange Avenue.

Major Arteries and Interchange Updates

The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) has scheduled intensive work at the intersection of SR 434 and SR 436 for today, Thursday, February 12. Motorists can expect the following impacts:

  • SR 434 and SR 436: Lane closures are expected in the right-turn lanes and outside through lanes in both directions. While inside lanes remain open, these restrictions are anticipated to create significant bottlenecks during the morning and afternoon peaks.
  • I-4 at World Drive (Disney Area): Late-night commuters heading toward the attractions should note that the I-4 eastbound off-ramp to World Drive southbound will be closed intermittently from 11:00 p.m. tonight until 5:00 a.m. Friday morning. Drivers should detour by using Exit 62 to World Drive northbound and making a U-turn.
  • I-4 Managed Lanes: Ongoing construction for the "Moving I-4 Forward" initiative continues in the Sand Lake Road and Daryl Carter Parkway sectors. While no new emergency closures are reported this morning, heavy equipment and narrow lanes remain a factor.

Downtown Orlando and Surface Street Alerts

In the heart of the city, the "Walk a Mile in Her Shoes" event will result in a significant lane closure starting this afternoon. The most eastern lane of Orange Avenue, stretching from Amelia Street to Anderson Street, will be closed starting at 3:00 p.m. today. This is expected to slow traffic moving south through the central business district during the evening rush hour.

In other local updates:

  • Bumby Avenue: Safety improvement work continues between Jamie Circle and Weber Street, with partial closures expected to persist through Friday.
  • Fern Creek Avenue: The intersection at Oregon Street remains closed for the Fern Creek Improvement Project, with work scheduled to wrap up by the end of this week.
  • Laureate Boulevard: Drivers in Lake Nona should remain alert to a new traffic pattern for the roundabout between Veterans Way and Benavente Avenue.

Public Transportation and Lynx Alerts

LYNX passengers will see temporary service adjustments today due to the downtown event. Between 3:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m., Links 3, 7, 11, 13, 15, 51, 60, 61, and 125 will undergo planned reroutes to accommodate the Orange Avenue closure. Additionally, riders are reminded that the system-wide service changes implemented in January remain in effect, specifically affecting routes in Seminole County. SunRail is operating on its standard Thursday schedule, which includes the recently added late-night weekday service for those looking to avoid evening highway congestion.
