What happened

A 65-year-old Orlando man died Saturday afternoon, Feb. 28, 2026, after the SUV he was driving left the roadway along North Goldenrod Road in Orange County and continued into a nearby parking lot, where it struck two unoccupied vehicles.

Florida Highway Patrol investigators reported the crash occurred north of Bryan Road on State Road 551, also known as Goldenrod Road. Troopers said the SUV was traveling north in the outside lane when it veered off the right side of the roadway for reasons that remained unclear as of Sunday.

Sequence of impacts

Investigators said the SUV first struck fixed objects along the roadside before reaching the parking area. The vehicle hit a sign and a fence, then continued into the lot and collided with two parked vehicles that were unoccupied at the time.

  • The SUV involved was identified as a Toyota RAV4.
  • The parked vehicles were identified as a Kia Stinger and a Ford F-250.

Medical response and outcome

The driver was transported to AdventHealth East, where he was pronounced dead, troopers said. No additional injuries were reported in connection with the parked vehicles, which were unoccupied when struck.

What investigators have not determined

Investigators said they did not yet know why the driver left the roadway. The incident remained under investigation, and authorities had not released details on potential contributing factors such as a medical event, distraction, impairment, vehicle malfunction, or road conditions.

Troopers have characterized the reason for the roadway departure as unknown and have indicated the case remains open pending further findings.

Why this crash drew attention

The crash underscores how roadway-departure events can escalate quickly even without a multi-vehicle collision on the travel lanes. In this case, the sequence involved a departure from the northbound lane, impacts with roadside fixtures, and a secondary collision in a parking lot that included two parked vehicles.

Florida Highway Patrol’s investigation is expected to focus on reconstructing the vehicle’s path and speed, confirming the timing of impacts, and reviewing any available physical evidence or witness information from the area near Goldenrod Road and Bryan Road.
