Major Arteries: Expressways and I-4 Projects

As Orlando commuters head out this Thursday, January 22, 2026, several large-scale infrastructure projects continue to influence traffic patterns on the region's major highways. The Central Florida Expressway Authority (CFX) is currently progressing with the SR 417 and SR 408 concrete coating project. While most of this work is scheduled during off-peak hours, drivers should remain alert for lane shifts and maintenance crews near the interchange of these two major toll roads. Additionally, a guide sign replacement project on SR 528, the Beachline Expressway, is active throughout January, resulting in periodic shoulder closures between the airport corridor and the Dallas Boulevard area.

On Interstate 4, the Moving I-4 Forward initiative is now in its early stages for Project 4, which targets the Osceola Parkway and SR 536 interchanges. While heavy heavy-duty construction is still ramping up, procurement and mobilization activities mean increased surveyor presence and potential intermittent shoulder restrictions in the Disney and Celebration corridors. Commuters are encouraged to utilize the I-4 Express lanes to bypass localized congestion in these active work zones.

City Road Closures and Local Detours

Surface street travel in Downtown Orlando and surrounding neighborhoods faces several significant disruptions today due to ongoing utility and safety improvements:

  • Summerlin Avenue: Drivers will encounter two major closures on this corridor. The intersection at Livingston Street is closed for a safety improvement project, and the segment between South Street and Church Street remains blocked for utility work.
  • Wadeview Park: Muriel Street is closed between South Orange Avenue and Delaney Avenue. This sanitary sewer project is slated to continue through the end of the month, requiring residents to use Gore Street as an alternative.
  • Lake Nona South: Today is the final scheduled day for the closure of Pearson Avenue between Rodbell Street and Dulbecco Street. The road is expected to reopen tomorrow, January 23.
  • Baldwin Park and Colonial Town Center: Lake Baldwin Lane remains closed between Jake Street and Nolan Court for re-roofing activities. Nearby, Fox Street is closed between McCullough Avenue and Bennett Road through January 30.

Public Transportation and Rail Updates

The system-wide LYNX service changes that took effect on January 11 are now in their second full week. Commuters in Seminole County are reminded that several routes, including Link 34, Link 45, and Link 103, have been discontinued as the county shifts to on-demand service models. In the city, Link 1 has been realigned to operate specifically between the Winter Park SunRail station and Maitland Center. Riders should verify their routes on the LYNX mobile app to account for these significant changes.

SunRail is operating on its enhanced weekday schedule, which includes the late-night southbound train and mid-evening northbound service introduced late last year. These additions provide more flexibility for those staying downtown for evening events or late work shifts, helping to alleviate the traditional evening rush on I-4.
