Demolition of the former Pulse nightclub begins March 18 as Orlando advances permanent memorial plans

Site work marks a transition from temporary tribute to long-term memorial construction
Demolition of the former Pulse nightclub structure in Orlando is scheduled to begin on Wednesday, March 18, 2026, as the city moves into a new phase of preparation for a permanent memorial at the property. The removal work follows weeks of site clearing, installation of construction fencing, and the careful removal of items intended for preservation.
The Pulse sign, long a visual marker for visitors who have gathered at the site in remembrance, has been taken down in mid-March and placed into secure storage for preservation during construction. The city has said the sign is expected to be retained for future use connected to the memorial project.
The demolition timeline arrives ahead of the 10-year anniversary of the June 12, 2016, attack at Pulse, in which 49 people were killed and 53 were injured during a Latin Night event. Since then, the site has functioned as an informal place of mourning and reflection, with messages, flags and flowers left along the perimeter.
Public access changes during demolition and early construction
Construction fencing has made the long-standing temporary memorial area inaccessible. During the construction period, a designated area is planned for community members to leave perishable items such as flowers. City officials have described the broader work zone as an active construction area intended to protect nearby residents, passersby and workers.
As part of preparations, artifacts from inside the building have been removed and transferred to secure storage. This preservation work is intended to support future memorial elements and to maintain continuity between the original location and the planned site design.
Design plans include preserved elements from the original site
City leaders and the project’s design-build team have presented a 30% design milestone for the permanent Pulse Memorial. The concept includes a reflection pool and a “Fountain Wall,” with the reflection pool placed within the footprint of the former club. Plans also call for an “Angel Ellipse” featuring pillars intended to honor each of the 49 victims individually, including the use of flags reflecting countries of origin.
- A portion of the original dance floor is planned to be placed beneath the reflection pool.
- Concrete from the structure is planned for recycling into memorial plaza elements.
- A salvaged “breach wall” is planned for placement near a central obelisk element.
The city’s approach centers on preserving selected physical components of the original site while clearing the property for new construction.
Additional design milestones are scheduled in 2026, as Orlando continues development of the permanent memorial project. The March 18 demolition is expected to be one of the most visible steps in converting the property from a closed crime scene and informal tribute location into a dedicated public memorial space.
