Public Notice: Essential Infrastructure and Traffic Alerts

The City of Orlando has announced a full road closure scheduled for Hillcrest Street in the Lake Eola Heights neighborhood. Starting Saturday, January 31, at 8:30 a.m., Hillcrest Street will be closed between Broadway Avenue and Cathcart Avenue for critical sanitary sewer repair work. While the closure begins tomorrow, residents are advised to plan alternative routes today, January 30. All work is expected to conclude by 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, though times are subject to change based on weather and field conditions. Motorists are urged to use caution and follow all posted detour signs in the area.

Public Health Advisories: Lake Safety and Radon Awareness

The Florida Department of Health in Orange County (DOH-Orange) continues to monitor local water quality and has maintained several active health alerts for the Orlando area:

  • Blue-Green Algae Alert: A health alert remains in effect for Lake Killarney and Lake Gatlin following the detection of harmful blue-green algae toxins. Residents and visitors should avoid swimming, wading, or using personal watercraft in areas where blooms are visible. Ensure pets are kept away from the water's edge, as these toxins can be fatal to animals.
  • National Radon Action Month: As January comes to a close, health officials are reminding residents that one in five Florida homes has elevated radon levels. Radon is a colorless, odorless gas that is the leading cause of lung cancer in non-smokers. Testing kits are available through the Department of Health to ensure residential safety.
  • Seasonal Illness Precautions: With high flu activity reported across Central Florida, the local Healthcare Center recommends isolating family members showing symptoms and staying home from school or work to prevent further spread.

City Business and Community Planning

Today, Friday, January 30, the City of Orlando will conduct a formal bid opening for Construction Project IFB26-0134. These sessions are part of the city’s commitment to transparency in public procurement and infrastructure development. Additionally, the city is currently soliciting public feedback for the 2026-2030 Consolidated Plan. This five-year strategy outlines priorities for affordable housing, homelessness prevention, and community development. Residents are encouraged to review the proposed Action Plan for Fiscal Year 2026-2027 and submit comments to the Housing and Community Development Department to help shape the future of Orlando's neighborhoods.

Upcoming Public Meetings

Looking ahead, the next regular meeting of the Orlando City Council is scheduled for Monday, February 9, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. in the Council Chambers at City Hall. Agenda items and public comment registration instructions are available through the City Clerk’s office.
